Cedar Grove was drowning in paper.

Actual paper.

The streets had become rivers of forms stamped URGENT and the trees sprouted sticky note leaves. Even the moon overhead now read For Office Use Only.

At the epicenter of it all was Harmony Café and in the café, Jeff, the  demon intern was wielding his clipboard like it was Excalibur in khakis.

“Phase Three is irreversible!” Jeff shouted over the chaos, his voice cracking like a dial-up modem. “Cedar Grove will be organized! Filed! Archived!”

“Over my espresso machine!” Matteo bellowed, blasting the walls with steaming geysers of triple roast.

Twirling her mop, Jo sent sparks flying. “We’ve fought demons, vampires, cursed focaccia. I am not being turned into a manila folder!”

Clorvex lunged at Jeff, claws swiping, but each strike only birthed another audit shade.

Mira hurled tea charms that briefly dissolved the shadows into loose-leaf confetti, but they reformed, screaming questions about Preferred Filing Methods.

It was Sev who gasped first. “The Loop!” He pointed at Jeff’s glowing clipboard. “It’s bound by infernal protocol. Which means loopholes.”

Jo’s eyes lit. “Jeff’s a bureaucrat. What if we out-bureaucrat him?”

They scrambled.

Mira scribbled counter-charms on sticky notes.

Matteo stamped espresso rings across tax forms until they became sigils.

“Who even files twice in triplicate?!” Clorvex asked as he tore up redundancies

Sev narrated the loophole hunt like a history channel host on too much caffeine.

Jo grabbed a black marker and scrawled across Jeff’s clipboard in huge, defiant letters, TERMINATED: Internship Expired.

The clipboard screamed as sparks flew from it. The blood-orange ink erupted like fireworks, splattering every wall with glowing runes. The audit shades howled and collapsed into piles of overdue invoices.

Jeff staggered, staring at his clipboard as it flickered and emptied page by page. “Y-you can’t just write that! There’s a whole appeals process…”

“Already denied,” Jo said, slamming the mop into the ground.

The Pentagram Loop cracked, then shattered. The rivers of ink evaporated into harmless glitter. The For Office Use Only moon peeled itself back into silver and Cedar Grove exhaled.

Jeff wasn’t vaporized, or banished into fire and brimstone. He was politely unsummoned.

A giant red RECALLED TO HEAD OFFICE stamp appeared across his forehead. A suction noise that sounded like someone unplugging a sink echoed across the cafe and Jeff was yanked into a glowing file folder that folded itself shut with a soft snap.

All that remained was his clipboard and a sticky note stuck to Jo’s mop.

In rushed handwriting, it read, This isn’t over. Please fill out my exit survey. Sincerely, Jeff.

Jo crumpled the note and tossed it into the trashcan as silence fell for a brief moment.

Clorvex bark-laughed so hard he knocked over a chair.

Covered in ink stains, Matteo collapsed against the counter as Mira brewed victory tea while Sev tried to catalogue what just happened for history’s sake.

The Queen of the Hollow Moon re-materialized in a flourish of glitter and sighed. “Darling, I leave you alone for one moment and you destroy a bureaucracy. Proud of you.”

With her mop still faintly sparking, Jo slumped against the pastry case. “Next time someone says ‘it’s just paperwork,’ I’m running.”

They clinked mugs.

Cedar Grove, for now, was safe again.

And somewhere, deep in the infernal bureaucracy of Hell’s HR department Jeff sat in a cubicle, headset crooked, muttering, “Thank you for holding. Your apocalypse is important to us.”
