CHAPTER 16: STEEPED IN SILENCE, SERVED WITH LIGHT

The dawn was quiet.

Not the usual Cedar Grove kind of quiet which was full of pre-espresso grumbles, steam hisses, and Clorvex humming “Livin’ La Vida Mocha” but truly quiet. A blanket of silence so thick, Jo could hear her own heartbeat.

And then nothing else.

She looked around the café. The Froth sat still and motionless in the foam pitcher. The espresso machine didn’t hum. The air was thick with unspoken tension as if the café itself was bracing for something terrible.

Mira stumbled in, breathless and holding a mug glowing faintly lavender.

“It’s started,” she whispered. “The Silent Steep.”

The ancient tea blend, the one Polly had warned Jo about, the one that had brewed just once in the days of Beatrix was steeping again, but not by their hand.

“The curse was activated when the first mug returned,” Mira explained. “The same magic. Full circle. It’s pulling everything inward. Every spell, every sip, every secret.”

The town outside was still. No birdsong. No vampires loitering. Even Baristopheles was curled up in a teacup and sleeping off a caffeine stupor.

The only sound came from beneath the counter. Polly’s ancient telegraph machine was clicking softly.

Jo sat beside it.

The message came slowly. This is not an end. This is a reset. Tea has secrets. Like you.

The café trembled. The lights dimmed and then the Queen of the Hollow Moon appeared in the doorway, her cloak rippling like smoke.

“This blend,” the Queen said, “will decide what stays and what is forgotten.”

Jo stood tall and said, “I brewed the first silence, but I’ll not brew the last.” Taking a deep breath, she poured a single steep of Silent Steep into the mug which was fully restored and humming softly and watched as the steam danced for them. “We’ll let the silence remember all of it. The chaos. The curses. The weirdness. The found family. Even the mop.”

Taking the mug from Jo, the queen smiled and said, “That’s my cue Anchor.” She gave Jo a knowing wink, “No need for you to return to the silence anytime soon.”

The Queen sipped.

Everything paused.

Then sound returned.

The espresso machine whirred. The Froth let out a long, foamy phew. Polly’s telegraph ticked a happy beat. Mira’s herbs rehydrated themselves. Matteo emerged from the basement with a tray of Anti-Curse CroissantsTM.

Clorvex blinked and questioned, “Did I just nap? Is this growth?”

Jo set the mug on the café shelf. Not hidden nor locked away. It was a reminder of the past, the present, and the future.

“You did it,” Mira whispered.

Jo shook her head. “We did it, and it’s only the end of this chapter.”

Clorvex raised a mug. “To Cedar Grove,” he said.

Everyone echoed back.

Jo added, “To the noise, the nonsense, and the next cup.”
